Earth Overshoot Day | 29th July 2019

We have done it again.

We have exhausted the Earth’s natural resources for the year, with over four months remaining - we have already had our Earth Overshoot Day this year.

July 29th 2019 marked our earliest ever Earth Overshoot Day, meaning we have already used the Earth’s natural resources quicker than they can be generated.

Earth Overshoot Day is when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceed what the Earth is able to regenerate in that year. The day is held by Global Footprint Network, who provide decision-makers around the world with a wide range of tools that help businesses and organisations operate within Earth’s ecological limits. The overshoot is calculated by using the following formula:

 (Planet’s Biocapacity / Humanity’s Ecological Footprint) x 365 = Earth Overshoot Day.

Even small changes to the way we live can have a big difference on the date of Earth Overshoot Day. For example, if we reduced our carbon footprint from driving by 50%, we would move back our Earth Overshoot Day by 11.5 days. Likewise, by adopting a vegetarian diet and reducing global meat consumption, we could heavily influence the 26% of the global ecological footprint that is made up by food. Just China alone eating 50% less meat would move Global Overshoot Day back 3 days!

Many developed countries around the world are to blame when it comes to Earth Overshoot Day. For example, if the global population lived up to the demand of the USA, we would need five Earth’s to match demand. Similarly, if the global population lived like the UK, we would need 2.7 Earths.

Reducing our own impact on the environment is of the utmost importance over the course of the few years. You can visit the Earth Overshoot Day website for more information about how to reduce your own footprint. Or if you want to know what your current contribution to Earth Overshoot Day is, follow this link and calculate your influence.

The Contamination Expo Series is Europe's leading event for contamination and geotechnical professionals. The show is designed for industry experts to view the latest products and services aiming to help decontaminate the environment, and improve conditions for everyone. By decontaminating the environment with increasingly efficient equipment, we are able to use our resources more competently, producing less waste and thus leaving a reduced footprint.

Tickets for the Contamination Expo Series are free and can be registered at the top of the page.
