ACHILLES Programme Grant
Kevin Briggs is a Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering and RAEng Industrial Fellow in ‘Railway Infrastructure Resilience’ (2017/18). His research is being used to assess the impact of a changing climate on the ageing and degradation of infrastructure earthworks (embankments & cuttings) supporting the railway and highway networks. This includes field and laboratory investigations into the behaviour of natural soils and engineered fills. Kevin was awarded the EPSRC Doctoral Prize in 2011 and became a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton before joining the University of Bath in 2012.
Investigating the deterioration of geotechnical infrastructure assets
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has granted flexible funding to progress this research through a Programme Grant, broadening the scope to all long-linear assets: ‘Assessment, costing and enhancement of long-life, long-linear assets – ACHILLES’. The ACHILLES research consortium comprises the Universities of Newcastle, Loughborough, Durham, Southampton, Bath and Leeds and the British Geological Survey. The Programme Grant start date is 1 July 2018, is led by the Principal Investigator Professor Glendinning (Newcastle University) and targets three interlinked research challenges (RCs); RC1 – Deterioration processes (lead Prof Toll; Durham University); RC2 - Asset performance (lead Prof Dixon; Loughborough University) and RC3 - Forecasting and decision support (lead Prof Wilkinson; Newcastle University). The Programme aims to develop knowledge and tools for predictable and improved long-term, long-linear asset performance at an affordable cost.
