Peter Witherington

Peter has over 35 years’ experience of providing geotechnical and environmental advisory services. His specialisms include contaminated sites; soil and groundwater pollution; landfill restoration and gas risks; and waste management. Peter has developed guidance manuals for several UK housing developers to ensure that development of potentially contaminated land is managed in a consistent and safe manner. He was on the steering committee for CIRIA’s report on methane and hazardous ground gases and chaired CIRIA’s committee for its VOC handbook and remediation guide. He chaired the AGS Ground Forum for nine years, represented HBF on the Land Forum and is a member of the SiLC Professional Technical Panel.

Reclamation and development of former landfills

The presentation will explore the challenges involved in the reclamation and development of former landfills, drawing on recent RSK projects as case studies, including the award-winning and innovative Sandford Farm project. It would cover practical considerations, how the regulatory regime is evolving to deal with such sites and what can be done to ensure such developments are successful and safe in the future.
